Couple More

So I haven't been keeping up with this very well - again! It's so hard to post everyday. But I'm trying. I know I don't have a large readership and I think that keeps me from posting too. But I'll try and do better. We'll see how it goes.

Yesterday I learned that in the Chinese culture, after a woman has a baby, the mom and baby stay home for the entire first 4 weeks.

Today I learned that a laptop computer battery is bullet proof - and no I did not shoot a computer to find out - I watched Mythbusters.

Catch-up

It's been a busy week including some time out of town, but here is what I have learned.

Wednesday: I learned that there is a product on the market right now called a Teacarina. It's a teacup that is also an ocarina.

Thursday: I figured out what I am going to give my brother for Christmas.

Friday: The origin of the word "ruthless" is very interesting. The word means being without the qualities of Ruth from the Bible. Ruth-less. Cool, huh?

Saturday: I learned that Utah State is an agricultural school and that is why they are the Utah Aggies. Also, several states have agricultural schools that have Aggies as the mascot.

Sunday: I learned all about what happened on 9/11/2001 from a wonderful documentary on the National Geographic channel.

Yesterday and Today

Yesterday I learned who John Malcovich was when I watched the movie RED. Great movie by the way. Ryan was so excited that I liked it as much as I did since I'm a girl and it's an action movie. For some reason I love Bruce Willis. I think it's because he was in Sixth Sense and The Whole Nine Yards.

Today I learned that Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is a really good book. I've heard this before, but I was told again today. Later tonight I think I might start reading it.

Last Song

Today I watched The Last Song for the first time. It was a good movie. I'm glad I was able to learn what that story is. It's sweet.

Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota

Today I learned that Weird Al's song Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota is a parody. I'm not sure what song it is a parody of, but I heard the original on the radio and was like, "hey.....this sounds familiar"

8

Yesterday I watched the movie 8: A Mormon Proposition. I actually fell asleep during it - documentaries aren't exactly known for holding my attention. It was a very interesting movie though. I won't go into detail about it because for some, the debate of gay marriage is a touchy topic. And I'm sure the movie exaggerated some things. It was very eye-opening though. Very interesting.

Today I learned a little more about one of the families I visit for preschool. I can't go into any detail here either. But this blog is only partially about sharing what I've learned. The bigger picture is showing that we do learn something everyday.

Forgot Yesterday

I'm already falling behind!

Yesterday I watched the movies Child's Play for the first time. I now know first hand who Chuckie is.

Today I learned what time my work meeting on Friday is. Much better than the 18 hour notice they sometimes give. What if I had kids and needed a babysitter?? 18 hours notice is not enough!!

Sunday, October 24, 2010

Engagement

Today I learned that my good friend Sarah - mentioned here - is now engaged!! I am so excited and happy for her!!!! I wish Sarah and Chris much happiness.

Deaths are Sad

Today I learned that a neighbor's husband recently died. I don't know this neighbor, but she is the mother of young children and her husband got cancer and died pretty quickly. It made me sad to hear this even though I have never even met this neighbor.

Ketchup and Fries

What came first? The ketchup or the french fry? They were actually first made around the same time - late 17th century. But they were not invented together nor put together until much later.

Scissors

Today I learned that despite knowing the proper way to hold and use scissors, I still instinctively do it incorrectly. I'm such a weirdo.

Sister or Cousin

Today I learned that one of my students is an only child. I thought he had a little sister. In fact, I have met said little sister. Turns out little sister is actually little cousin.

I am so neglectful

I have been so neglectful of this blog. I feel like such a slacker. If this blog were a pet fish, it would be long dead and gone.
*insert tear for the sad, dead fish soul of my blog*
I am going to try and revive this blog and make it even better than it was before. Feel free to comment with anything you have learned.
And to start of this new beginning:
Today I learned a great route to use for walking around the neighborhood near the school I work at so as to get some exercise in while on my breaks. Two laps around the block takes me 30 minutes (my break time). So hopefully the weather will stay nice long enough that I can utilize this useful information and get back to loosing a little weight before the holidays set it.
Thanks for reading!!!!!

Pika Pikachu

Yesterday I learned that a pika is an animal for which Pikachu from Pokemon is named after and pikachu is actually another name for the animal.

Today I learned that yesterday's bit of knowledge is not correct. Pikachu that pokemon was modeled after a pika. However, Pikachu is not another name for the actual animal. I'll let you know if I find out any more information contradicting anymore of this current information.

I am so behind!!

Wow!!! It has soooo been a crazy week!!!! I haven't been able to blog for almost an entire 7 days! Wow. Let's see if I can remember what I've learned this week.

Sunday I learned how to make honey butter. I also learned that I don't like the taste of home made honey butter. (Ryan and everyone else liked it though, so don't think I just suck at making honey butter, okay?)

Monday I learned who the teachers I am going to work with this year are.

Tuesday I learned which children are going to be in my class.

Wednesday I learned what Indian food tastes like. It's really good; but I had never had it before. Thanks Ryan for insisting I try it!!!

Thursday I learned that the ensalda salad at Bajio's is AWESOME!!!!

Today I learned that there are 210 calories in each white chocolate macadamia nut cookie from Subway. I ate 3. I also learned what a plantain tastes like. I also learned that ensalda is spanish for salad. That means that the ensalda salad at Bajio's is the salad salad. Weird.

Another "I Feel Dumb" Moments

Today I learned the difference between melding and welding.

Friday, August 27, 2010

Dr. Oz

Today I learned from Dr. Oz that one way to increase your iron intake is to cook your food in a cast iron skillet. Weird, huh?

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Sharks and Robots and Models

Today I learned how to do an emoticon shark (^^^) and a robot :|]
(They show up as a shark picture and a robot pictures in chats.)

Yesterday I learned that the book "72 Girls and Some Boys Who Could Be Models" sucks!! I bought it for $0.65 at a discount store. It was wrapped in cellophane so I had no idea what was inside. But I figured that for 65 cents I would find out. Waste of money!

The Baldwins

So apparently Alec Baldwin and Stephen Baldwin are brothers. There are two more Baldwin brothers as well but I haven't heard of them. I feel lame for having not known this sooner. I mean, they have the same last name and even look alike. Maybe if their last name was more unique like Arquette I would have made the connection sooner.

.doc .tif .gif

Today I learned how to turn a word document (.doc) into a file that adobe photoshop can read (.tif) and then how to turn that into something uploadable for my blog (.gif) And I figured out how to do it all by myself (well, searching google helped, but I did my own research.) I feel smart today.

Sunday, August 22, 2010

Friday - today I learned how people don't bleed out during a surgery. If you cut yourself, you bleed, right? So if a doctor cuts you and does a 8 hour surgery (or even a shorter one) how do you not bleed out? They use clamps to stop the blood from flowing to the area being worked on. Neat, eh?

Saturday - today I learned that all books published through Deseret Book publishing have to be approved by the Mormon 1st presidency.

Sunday - today I learned that there is such a thing as sexual anorexia. It's an actual term basically for people who don't like sex. I won't go into anymore detail. It's kinda weird. But it's apparently a real thing.

Continuing Education

Today I learned that my employer is working on setting up online courses for us to continue our education. To stay with this company long term I need an associates degree in early childhood education. So it is nice to know that our supervisors are helping us get there. And what is even better is that they are working on online options. I don't know anymore details than that. But a little info is better than none.

McDonalds and the 19th amendment

Yesterday I learned that McDonalds will give out gift certificates if you complain about poor service. They actually have a really good customer relations division.

Today I learned that today is the 90th anniversary of the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote.

Catch up

Due to vacationing in St. Louis, I have also seemed to have vacationed from this blog. Let's see if I can catch up.

Sunday Aug. 8: I learned how to play a new game. It is called Mille Bornes and it is really fun. I lost horribly, but that is okay. It was still tons of fun.

Wednesday Aug. 11: I found out my start date for work this fall. Now if only they would tell me my location.

Thursday Aug. 12: I learned about planning funerals. Did you know that if you pre-pay for your funeral, you get the pricing based on when you pre-pay, not on when you use their services? So if you spend $10,000 now and die in 50 years, that funeral you planned could be worth way more than $10,000 in that current market, but you still only have to pay that original $10,000. Neat, huh? And it makes it easier on your loved ones left behind because a large portion is not only already planned, but paid for as well.

Friday Aug. 13: The musical "Showboat" is pretty lame. The plot is alright but it is sooooo long it is not worth seeing.

Saturday Aug. 14: I found out who won Hell's Kitchen. Congrats Holli. I am so excited for her. She is awesome. Though I am very sad that Jay lost. I wish so bad that they both could have won.

Sunday Aug. 15: Today I learned that people will take soda cans and turn them into containers for their weed. They were actually really neat containers - you could keep important non-weed items in these cans too. The salesman was so funny. I think he actually thought Ryan and I smoked weed and were interested in his merchandise. And then Ryan is silly and tells the guy we aren't going to buy anything because we don't need another one. The guy was totally treating us like insiders. Too bad for him we don't smoke pot. Though I do still think it would be fun to own a bong just to own one. But we don't want any suspicion thrown our way.

Today: I learned a friend of mine is getting married today. Yep, just found out today that the wedding is today.

Pampered Chef

Today I learned that my Pampered Chef deliveries arrived at my house today. Soooo exciting. I can't wait to open the boxes and see all my new stuff.

Neat, eh?

Today I learned who went home on Thursday on Big Brother. I am so happy they have invented DVR. More importantly to this situation, I am very happy they put TV episodes online.

Stuff

Yesterday I learned that Jack Weyland wrote a book about a girl whose stepdad raped her and got her pregnant. And he wrote this book in the 80s. Seems a little heavier than stuff I normally used to reading from him.

Today I learned where my friend Julie now lives. She gets married next week and I got to visit her new apartment today. Fun stuff. I like driving around St. Peters area.

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

Rastafarian

Today I learned more about the Rastafarian lifestyle. Before today I pretty much only knew that it existed. And while my knowledge is still very limited, I learned a bit more about their beliefs in karma and their God Jah. It is also strongly associated with Reggae music. I enjoy learning about other cultures and ways of living.

New Bus in China

Did you know that China is trying to initiate having a bus that drives over traffic? It's like a moving bridge. Weirdness.

Monday, August 2, 2010

Girlfriend

Today I learned that my good friend Stephen has a girlfriend.

Sunday, August 1, 2010

Maverick's Little Lamb Creek

Yesterday I learned that Mary Had a Little Lamb was the first song played on a phonograph.

Today I learned that the Maverick Gas Stations have ovens and bakeries on site. I totally assumed that everything was shipped in, but apparently some things are made at the store. I don't know what all they make there, but they make breads and things. They might still have some things shipped, but I totally didn't know that they baked on site. I think that's cool.

Oh and I also learned that Deer Creek Reservoir is not a creek. Well, I could tell from looking at it that it wasn't a creek. But people always call it Deer Creek. Turns out that Deer Creek is the name of the Reservoir and Deer is NOT the name of the Creek. Make sense?

Saturday, July 31, 2010

Seven Peaks

Yesterday I learned that Seven Peaks closes at 8pm but they don't post it anywhere. Weirdos.

Thursday, July 29, 2010

Yogurt

Today I learned that vanilla yogurt and plain yogurt are NOT the same thing.

I also learned that if a recipe calls for plain yogurt and you use vanilla it will end up tasting like cake. Chicken-potato-cake anyone?

ThisThatHereThere

This is to Here as That is to There.

I'm sure I already knew that. It's not like I used the words incorrectly before. But I never made the connection.

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Alan Rickman

Alan Rickman was a graphic designer before he got into acting. He even started his own graphic design company.

Monday, July 26, 2010

Iggy's

Today I learned that Iggy's is giving away a free reusable tote to anyone who orders one of their non-alcoholic specialty drinks. I thought about buying one because I like reusable totes for some reason, but I opted out.

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Cooking and Bulls

Yesterday I learned that I can stay on a mechanical bull for 40 seconds. Fun! And I can cross that off my bucket list, too.

Today I learned how to make raspberry-apple-cream-cheese-danish-dip. YUM.

Friday, July 23, 2010

Idaho

It takes just over 4.5 hours to get from Provo, UT to Rexburg, ID.

Thursday, July 22, 2010

I love learning

Tuesday: I learned how 4-D movies work. I don't know all the ins and outs but it has something to do with one lens on the glasses being darker than the other. It is kinda weird to have one lens darker, but it makes for a cool effect.

Wednesday: I learned that the song Where is Thumpkin is to the same tune as Frere Jacques. Maybe I'm lame for not making the connection sooner, but oh well.

Today: I finally learned how to get Lily licensed. Too bad they were closed today.

Monday, July 19, 2010

Ryan's new job

Today I learned when pay day is for Ryan's new job.

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Because Every Post Needs a Title

Yesterday I learned all about Drive-in movie theaters. One thing that is cool is that there are upward sloped parking spaces for you car so you can park on a angle making it easier to see and easier for those behind you to see. I also learned that there are not enough woman's bathroom stalls at the Redwood Drive-In.

Today I learned what bonds are. There are very much like stocks and I guess I always knew that (because we always here about stocks and bonds). But bonds are usually for smaller companies that needs funds to start up and assuming the company doesn't go under, you can just turn in your bond for what you paid for it plus interest.

Yay! I'm caught up!

Knowledge is Power

Thursday I learned that the fat children in America hang out at the McDonald's play place.

Yesterday I learned that downtown Magna is kinda creepy. I also learned that you can spot a gas station that sells drugs by comparing gas prices. If the price of gas is 15 cents more than the station across the street, they probably sell drugs there.

Thursday, July 15, 2010

More Knowledge

Yesterday I learned all about getting cavities filled. Being numb isn't fun, but the Novocaine shot didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would.

The day before that I learned that public schools could be considered a form of socialism.

Monday, July 12, 2010

Catch-up Time

Let's see. I've gotten behind already. That's okay. I'll catch up now.

Yesterday I learned that Occident is the opposite of Orient.

Saturday I learned all about drug use in Utah Valley from watching the movie Happy Valley.

Friday I learned that 5-0 means police. (That's why the show is called Hawaii Five-O)

And....today....goats milk is bad for babies.

Thursday, July 8, 2010

Two more for today

I also learned that there are two main shapes to acoustic guitars. (I also just learned how to spell acoustic.) There is the drednought shape which is slightly more square of a shape and the classical shape.

And I just learned on an online article that 40,000 women in the United States suffer from seminal plasma hypertension. Basically, an alergy to semen because the body over reacts and thinks it is a bacteria or virus and starts to attack the protein inside. Crazy huh? Who would have thought. (Ryan thinks this is just the technical term for lesbians.) Read about this and more for yourself if you'd like:
9 Surprising Allergy Triggers

Supernal

Supernal is the superlative form of super. (Superior is the comparative.)

Cashews and Yogurt

Yesterday I read an online article that mentioned putting cashews in yogurt. I had never thought of that before, but I tried it. And I learned that cashews in yogurt is delicious. You should try it too.

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

Caring Valley

On Webkinz, when you plant 4 seeds in the Caring Valley, you get to make a special tree to plant in your own garden. The options for the special tree are based on what month of the year it is. My tree is soooo pretty.

Monday, July 5, 2010

Yumberry

Did you know that there is such a thing as a yumberry? It's from China and is very high in antioxidants. It looks very pretty and tasty too. It's one of Jamba Juice's new flavors. I wasn't brave enough to try it today, but I just think it is awesome that there is such a thing as a yumberry.

Sunday, July 4, 2010

Carte Blanche

Today I learned the French phrase "Carte Blanche." The translation means blank check and means full discretionary power. I heard the phrase on the TV show Lost. One character said she would help another character if for Carte Blanche meaning she could ask for something - anything - at a later date with no questions asked. I find it a neat phrase that I shall try to use in the future.

Saturday, July 3, 2010

Studabaker

Today I learned that the Studabaker company was the only horse carriage company to make the switch from horses and carriages to automobiles. All other car companies started as car companies.

You Learn Something New Everyday

We've all heard the expression: "You learn something new everyday."
I believe it.
This blog is an experiment to actually see if it is true. I plan to blog everyday - one thing that I learned (maybe more than 1 if it is a particularly educational day).
Here goes....
